Reduce card not present (CNP) fraud

Almost 85% of card fraud in Australia relates to payments that are made online. We recommend customers follow the fraud mitigation framework advice from the Australian payments industry body, AusPayNet.

Things you should know

1 Card-not-present transactions, including transactions using Payment Links, involve a higher fraud and chargeback risk than transactions where the card is present. You (the merchant), not Tyro or the cardholder, are liable for all chargebacks: see the Electronic Payments Facility Terms and Conditions at tyro.com/terms-and-conditions/. Supported Cards
Payment Links support Visa, Mastercard and American Express card payments only. JCB is not supported via Payment Links (including where JCB may be available when American Express is enabled on other Tyro products), and other card schemes are currently not supported.

Pricing

  • Visa and Mastercard: You will be charged a rate of 1.4% (incl. GST) of the transaction value per transaction for domestic and international card payments processed through Payment Links.
  • American Express (OptBlue merchants): You will be charged a rate of 1.4% (incl. GST) of the transaction value per transaction for domestic and international American Express card payments processed through Payment Links.
  • American Express (Classic merchants): If you have a direct agreement with American Express (Classic) and your own negotiated American Express rates, Tyro does not apply the 1.4% OptBlue rate to your American Express transactions. Instead, Tyro charges a 0.1% switch fee (excl. GST), which is invoiced separately by Tyro. Your negotiated American Express transaction fees are charged directly by American Express under your existing agreement.

You will be invoiced by Tyro for fees associated with transactions processed through Payment Links (including any switch fee), even if you are on a No Cost EFTPOS pricing structure.

3‑D Secure

Payment Links come with 3‑D Secure (3DS), a security protocol that adds an additional layer of security to online purchases by requiring cardholders to authenticate themselves with the card issuer when making payments. It helps to prevent unauthorised online transactions, reducing the risk of fraud, and may help reduce the risk of certain chargebacks if the transaction is authenticated successfully.

Eligibility

Some business types (MCCs) may be excluded from card-not-present transactions using Payment Links.
